Friends, Family & Partners
Mothers Support System -- As partners, family, or friends of the mother, you are an important part of a healthy pregnancy and postpartum. One way to support mother is by being available to them to talk and express their feelings. As an essential part of mom and baby’s support system, you can ask her how you can support her best. If mom is unsure, try a specific offer of support such as “Could I help by bringing you a meal?” Offering to support mom during pregnancy and postpartum is one way to deepen the bonds of family and friendship.
If you find that mom needs additional support, you can call or refer to them to contact the warm line of Postpartum Support International. Trained volunteers respond to messages to the warm-line and can offer local support resource information.

Partners -- As partners, you may also experience a range of emotions. It is common for partners experience low moods or anxiety after the birth of a baby. While 10% of dads develop postpartum depression, as many as 18% develop postpartum anxiety (Postpartum Support International, 2020). To support mom and baby, you will need to take time for your own self-care and well-being daily. Identify your support system, accept offers of help for the family unit, and develop a daily routine of self-care to restore your energy. By communicating with your partner about your feelings, you can work as a team during this time of transition. There are many resources available specifically for you.
