Friends, Family & Partners

Mothers Support System --  As partners, family, or friends of the mother or birthing parent, you are an important part of a healthy pregnancy and postpartum. One way to provide support is by being available to them to talk and express their feelings. As an essential part of the birthing parents support system, you can ask how you can be of support best. If they are  unsure, try a specific offer of support such as “Could I help by bringing you a meal?” Offering to support your partner during pregnancy and postpartum is one way to deepen the bonds of family and friendship.

If you find that they need additional support, you can call or refer to them to contact the warm line of Postpartum Support International. Trained volunteers respond to messages to the warm-line and can offer local support resource information.

Partners --  As partners, you may also experience a range of emotions. It is common for partners to experience low moods or anxiety after the birth of a baby.  To support your partner, you will need to take time for your own self-care and well-being daily. Identify your support system, accept offers of help for the family unit, and develop a daily routine of self-care to restore your energy. By communicating with your partner about your feelings, you can work as a team during this time of transition. There are many resources available specifically for you.
